IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS (TAMIL NADU AMENDMENT) ACT, 1981

Received the assent of the President on the 21st July 1981 and first published in the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette Extraordinary, dated the 27th July 1981.
An Act further to amend the Identification of Prisoners Act, 1920 in its application to the State of Tamil Nadu.
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Tamil Nadu in the Thirty-second Year of the Republic of India as follows;
1. Short title and extent. - (1) This Act may be called the Identification of Prisoners (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 1981.
(2) It extends to the whole of the State of Tamil Nadu.
Object & Reasons
Statement of Objects and Seasons - Identification of Prisoners (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 1981 (Tamil Nadu Act 44 of l981). - Under the Identification of Prisoners Act, 1920 (Central Act XXXIII of 1920) only Police officers not below the rank of Sub-Inspector are authorised to take measurements including finger impressions and foot-print impressions of convicted persons and arrested persons. The posts of Tester Sub-Inspectors which were created for the purposes of the said Act have been abolished and in lieu of the said posts, the posts of Finger Print Experts have been created and certain persons were appointed to these posts. With a view to enable these Finger Print Experts also to take measurements of convicted persons and arrested persons, it has been felt necessary to amplify the definition of "Police officer" in clause (b) of section 2 of the said Act so as to include these, Experts also.
2. The Bill seeks to achieve the above object.

2. Amendment of section 2, Central Act XXXIII of 1920. - In clause (b) of section 2 of the Identification of Prisoners Act, 1920 (Central Act XXXIII of 1920), after the words "sub-inspector", the words "and includes Finger Print Experts of the Finger Print Bureau, Madras and of the Single Digit Finger Print sections in the State of Tamil Nadu" shall be inserted.
