THE CITY OF MADRAS (ALTERATION OF NAME) ACT, 1996

Received the assent of the Governor on the 5th September 1996 and published in Part IV-Section 2 of the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette Extraordinary, dated the 6th September 1996. (Issue No. 452).
An Act to alter the name of City of Madras.
Be it enacted by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Tamil Nadu in the Forty-Seventh Year of the Republic of India as follows:-
1. Short title and commencement. - (1) This Act may be called the City of Madras (Alteration of Name) Act, 1996.
(2) It shall come into force on such date as the State Government may, by notification, appoint.
Object & Reasons
Statement of Objects and Reasons - City of Madras (Alteration of Name) Act, 1996 (Tamil Nadu Act 28 of 1996). - The area comprising the City of Madras has been called as "Chennai" in Tamil from ancient days. This name has been employed by the people in different walks of life and it has thus been universally accepted Keeping the universal acceptance of the name "Chennai" in view and keeping also the historical, social, cultural and other details of the City of Madras in view, the Government have taken a policy decision that Madras would be hereafter called "Chennai" in all languages, as against "Madras" and "Madharas" now being called in other languages.
2. The Bill seeks to give effect to the above decision.

2. Definitions. - In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires, law includes any enactment, ordinance, regulation, order, bye-law, scheme, notification or other instrument having the force of law in the whole or any part of the State of Tamil Nadu with respect to which the State Legislature has competence to make law.
3. Alteration of name of City of Madras. - On and from the date appointed under sub-section (2) of section 1, for the word "Madras" occurring in any law in force in this State, the word "Chennai" shall be substituted.
