THE CHENNAI HIGH COURT (JURISDICTIONAL LIMITS) EXTENSION ACT, 1985

An Act to provide for the extension of the ordinary original civil jurisdiction of the [Chennai] High Court to certain areas.
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Tamil Nadu in the Thirty-sixth Year of the Republic of India as follows:-
1. Short title and saving. - (1) This Act may be called the [Chennai] High Court (Jurisdictional Limits) Extension Act, 1985.
(2) Nothing in this Act shall affect any suit or other legal proceeding pending in any court at the date of the commencement of this Act.
Object & Reasons
Statement of Objects and Reasons - - In May 1978, certain areas comprising within twelve panchayats in the Saidapettai taluk of the Chegalpattu District contiguous to the City of Madras, have been included within the City of Madras. As the ordinary original civil jurisdiction of the Madras High Court extends to the City of Madras, it is proposed to extend the ordinary original civil jurisdiction of the Madras High Court to the newly included areas also.
2. The Bill seeks to achieve the above object.
2. Extension of ordinary original civil jurisdiction of [Chennai] High Court. - Notwithstanding anything contained in the [Chennai] High Court (Jurisdictional Limits) Act, 1927 (Tamil Nadu Act IV of 1927) or any other law for the time being in force, the ordinary original civil jurisdiction of the High Court of Judicature of [Chennai] shall also extend to the areas comprised in the revenue villages specified in the Schedule.
