THE MAHARASHTRA DELETION OF THE TERM "FAMINE" (FROM LAWS APPLICABLE TO THE STATE) ACT, 1963

An Act to delete the term "famine" from all laws in the State of Maharashtra
WHEREAS the agricultural situation in the State is constantly watched by the State Government, and relief measures as warranted by the situation are provided as soon as signs of scarcity conditions are apparent, so that there is now no scope for famine conditions to develop:
AND WHEREAS the term "famine" in the Bombay State Famine Relief Fund Act, 1958 and other laws on the subject in their application to the State has now become obsolete, and requires therefore to be deleted therefrom ; It is hereby enacted in the Fourteenth Year of the Republic of India as follows .—
NOTES
Since independent Government was always taking immediate and vigorous steps to check conditions of agricultural distress and started relief works to help people in scarcity affected areas, so that famine, as traditionally known, had become a thing of past. According the State Government had decided to use the term "scarcity" instead of "famine" and to amend appropriately the laws on the subject in their application to this state— Vide Statement of Objects add Reasons.
SECTION 01: SHORT TITLE
This Act may be called the Maharashtra Deletion of the Term "famine" (From Laws applicable to the State) Act, 1963.
SECTION 02: AMENDMENTOFENACTMENTS, ETC., FOR DELETION OF REFERENCES TO "FAMINE''
From thecommencement ofthis Act, in all enactments relating to any ofthe matters enumerated in Lists IIand IIIin theSeventhScheduletothe Constitution of India, intheirapplicationto theState of Maharashtra (hereinafter referred to as "State laws"), and in all instrumentsand otherdocuments,theword "famine'' shall be deemed to have been deleted.
SECTION 03: AMENDMENTS TO BOM. LXXXIII OF 1958 AND POWER TO ADAPT OTHER STATE LAWS BY NOTIFICATION
(1)The enactment specified in column 1 of the Schedule isherebyamended in the manner, and to the extent, shown in column 2 thereof.
(2) Before the expiration of one year from the commencement of this Act, the State Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, delete the word "famine" from any State law and where the context requires, substitute for the word "famine" the word "scarcity" and make such consequential amendments as the rules of grammar may require.
