DRAVIDIAN UNIVERSITY ACT, 1997
17 of 1997
14th JULY, 1997
The Indian Sub-Continent has provided a home for a rich mosaic of cultures and languages. It is widely recognised that in the composite culture of India, the Dravidian way of life, its contribution of philosophical thinking and to art, architecture and medicine are distinct and substantial. For a full appreciation of Indian Culture within and beyond India, indepth studies are needed on the contribution of the South to Indian culture. Dravidology is an important part of Indology which unfortunately has not received the attention it deserves of well known Indologists and Orientalists so far. This area of studies needs a revamping and revitalisation. Traditional Indian culture and civilisation cannot be properly understood and evaluated without a deeper and extensive study of Dravidology which is a very important component. Focussing attention on this very important area of studies is definitely not to breed exclusiveness, but to emphasise inter-relatedness with other areas of Indian culture and tradition. The ultimate purpose is to foster and strengthen national integration through a wider knowledge and understanding of literature, culture, sciences, medicine, engineering and technology. The Dravidan University is an innovative concept of reaching significance in the current academic context. A multi-focus University, it should become the 'social conscience' of the Dravidian people, their religion and culture, literature and art, science and technologies; It is meant to play a crucial role in affirming the Dravidian Cultural heritage, reinstating the native idioms. It is anticipated that there will be an active participation and involvement of the Govt. of India and all the States in the Southern Region in the setting up and functioning of this University. This Bill seeks to achieve the above objectives. Act No.17 of 1997
