Statement of Objects and Reasons.—The Indian Universities Act, 1904 was passed by the Governor General of India in Council on 24th March, 1904 to amend the law relating to the Universities of British India established and incorporated at Calcutta, Bombay,

Madras, Lahore and Allahabad. Since the State of West Bengal, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh have enacted their own Acts to govern the Universities of Calcutta, Bombay, Madras and Allahabad respectively, the Indian Universities Act, 1904 has lost its significance. Hence, it is proposed to repeal the Act. The Commission on Review of Administrative Laws set up by the Central Government has also identified and recommended the Indian Universities Act, 1904 for repeal. 2. The Bill seeks to achieve the above object. Are Act to repeal the Indian Universities Act, 1904 Be it enacted by Parliament in the Fifty second Year of the Republic of India as follows:-

SECTION 01: SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be called the Indian Universities (Repeal) Act, 2001.-

SECTION 02: REPEAL OF ACT 8 OF 1904.

Indian Universities Act, 1904-is hereby repealed.
